What we won't pretend
Reading text out of your scans means a machine reads your scans. On the desktop that machine is yours and nothing is sent anywhere. For browser uploads it's our server, and we say so rather than claiming an end-to-end encryption that recognition would make impossible.
Your files are encrypted at rest and in transit, the same as every major service. That protects against a stolen disk. It does not mean we can't read them — no product with search inside your documents can honestly claim otherwise.
If a notebook should never be read by anyone, put it in the Private vault — encrypted with your key, searchable only on your own machine, never uploaded.
